Sources of variation in baseline and stress-induced blood glucose levels in two free-living tropical passerine species

نویسندگان

چکیده

Blood glucose plays an essential role in the body's energy metabolism; however, sources of variation baseline and stress-induced changes concentration remain poorly understood tropical passerines. This study assesses intra-annual two common free-living Afrotropical passerines, village weaver (Ploceus cucullatus) (Müller, 1776) black-crowned waxbill (Estrilda nonnula) (Hartlaub, 1883), captured around Dschang, western Cameroon, using intrinsic (sex, body mass, moult breeding status) environmental (season, temperature rainfall) variables as predictors. In waxbills, we found that was significantly elevated dry season, with same trend observed weaver. Stress-induced elevations were waxbills but only when fitted a covariate. Village females showed higher compared to males. Body mass moulting not predictors or concentrations. reveals some fluctuations levels may be mediated by seasonal (but rainfall), sex, status.

Changes in Blood Levels of Thyroid Hormones in Two Species of Passerine Birds

-Annual changes in plasma levels of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) were compared in White-crowned Sparrows (Zonotrichia leucophrys gumbeliz) and House Sparrows (Passer domesticus) using serial blood samples from birds maintained in outdoor aviaries and from feral birds. Gonadal size was monitored by monthly laparotomy, and plumage was examined for molt at frequent intervals. Hormone l...

Stress, metabolism, and antioxidants in two wild passerine bird species.

Antioxidants protect against free-radical damage, and free radicals, in turn, are thought to underlie aging. Thus, measuring antioxidants may aid field ecologists in understanding the physiological mechanisms that underlie life-history trade-offs. Antioxidant levels are known to vary markedly in response to the stress of capture in many birds. These changes in antioxidants could result from reg...
